Let’s Talk Poop: A Guide to Baby Poop & Cloth Diapers

Let’s Talk Poop: A Guide to Baby Poop & Cloth Diapers

If you're cloth diapering...chances are you've already had your fair share of diaper surprises when you go to change your baby's diaper.  From the yellow of breastfed newborns to the first solid-food blowout, dealing with poop is one of the (not so fun) parts of the parenting journey.

In this guide, we’re breaking down the messy stuff:

  • How to handle poop in cloth diapers
  • What baby poop colors actually mean
  • Tips for preventing stains and blowouts
  • Our favorite poop-fighting accessories from Nora’s Nursery

Let’s dive into the poop! — metaphorically, of course.

Baby Poop Color Guide: What’s Normal?

If you’re a parent, you quickly learn that baby poop comes in a surprisingly wide range of colors — and most of them are completely normal

Understanding what you’re seeing can help you feel more confident during diaper changes.

Here’s a simple breakdown of common — and not-so-common — baby poop colors:

Mustard Yellow: Mustard yellow poop is very common, especially in breastfed babies. This color is typically soft, seedy, and completely normal.

Green: Green poop can happen for many reasons, including:

  • Diet changes

  • Green foods

  • Supplements or medications

  • Food sensitivities or intolerance

  • Illness or infection

Occasional green stools are usually not a cause for concern.

Mucousy Green: Green poop with a mucous-like texture may sometimes occur during:

  • Teething

  • Minor illness or viruses

  • Food sensitivities

If it appears occasionally, it may simply reflect changes in your baby’s body or digestion.

Red or Blood-Tinged: Red coloring in stool can sometimes come from:

  • Red foods or dyes

  • Minor irritation (such as small fissures)

  • Food sensitivities

  • Intestinal irritation or infection

Because red can indicate blood, it’s always worth monitoring and discussing with a healthcare professional if you’re unsure.

Black: Very dark or black stool can occur in newborns as meconium, your baby’s first poop.

Meconium is thick, sticky, and made up of substances swallowed in the womb, including:

  • Amniotic fluid

  • Skin cells

  • Mucus

  • Lanugo (fine hair)

This is normal in the early newborn period.

Tan or Brown: Tan or brown poop is very common once babies begin eating solid foods.

As diet expands, stool color often becomes more varied and closer to typical “brown” tones.

Baby poop can change frequently based on:

  • Diet

  • Age

  • Feeding method

  • Illness

  • Developmental stages

Most variations are completely normal — even if they look surprising at first.

From a Cloth Diaper Parent Perspective

If you use cloth diapers, you’ll notice changes even more quickly — and that’s actually helpful! Being able to see patterns can make it easier to understand what’s normal for your baby.

Pro tip: stains don’t affect diaper performance! Read "Removing stains in cloth diapers"

** Always consult your paediatrician if you notice persistent changes, especially blood, mucus, or chalky gray poop.

Cloth Diapering = Poop Awareness (And That’s a Good Thing)

One of the surprising benefits of cloth diapering is how in tune you become with your baby’s health. You’ll quickly learn what’s normal, what’s not, and when something is off — whether it’s mucus in baby poop, green mucus stools, or signs of a milk intolerance.

How to Deal with Poop in Cloth Diapers

 Before Solids (0–6 months)

  • Breastfed baby poop is water-soluble and washes out easily. No need to rinse!

  • Formula-fed poop may be thicker — a quick spray or rinse before washing helps.

After Starting Solids

Time to level up. Solids = stickier poop. Here’s how to make cleanup easier:

  • Use a diaper sprayer or scrape solids into the toilet

  • Add liners to catch most of the mess

  • Keep Nora’s Wet Bags nearby for quick containment on-the-go

Can I Use Baby Wipes with Cloth Diapers?

Yes! But here’s the deal:

  • Disposable wipes can be used, just don’t toss them in the diaper pail — they’ll clog your wash routine.

  • We recommend reusable cloth wipes — soft, durable, washable, and designed to work with your cloth routine.

Poop-Stain Wash Routine (That Actually Works)

Stains happen — but don’t panic. Here’s our go-to routine for poop cleanup:

  1. Remove solids (spray, dunk, or disposable liner toss)

  2. Pre-rinse or short cold cycle

  3. Warm/hot wash with a strong cloth diaper safe detergent - See Washing 101 for details

  4. Extra rinse to flush out any extra residue

  5. Dry: To lengthen the lifespan of your diapers, your best bet is to tumble dry on a delicate or low heat setting. When drying cloth diapers, avoid dryer sheets as this can cause residue build-up.

  • Hang drying cloth diapers is also a great way to protect your diapers and save energy!

TIP: Line dry in the sun — nature’s best stain remover ! Hang drying cloth diapers outside in the sun not only helps dry your diapers quickly, but the sun is a tried and tested way to remove stubborn stains!

 Let’s Talk Blowouts

Just like disposables, blowouts can happen with cloth diapers — especially during growth spurts or food transitions.

Prevent blowouts with:

  • Proper fit: Use rise snaps to snug the waist and legs

  • Extra inserts: Add absorbency with cotton or hemp boosters

  • Backup Diapers: Keep spare diapers handy, especially for naps or outings

  • Changing pads: Our waterproof changing pads are lifesavers for on-the-go accidents

Nora’s Nursery Essentials for Poop Days

Poop happens. Blowouts happen; And while it can feel overwhelming at first, having the right tools on hand makes all the difference. These essentials are designed to help you handle even the messiest days with confidence, and ease!

Your trusty diapers + favorite inserts: Customizable, absorbent, and easy to clean

A reliable diaper setup is your first line of defence. Pairing your Nora’s Nursery pocket diapers with inserts you know and love helps contain messes while keeping baby comfortable. The trim fit helps reduce gaps (hello, fewer leaks), while high-quality inserts absorb quickly and wash clean without holding onto odors.

Diaper Covers: Great for layering over inserts or prefolds

Covers are a lifesaver on poop days. They add an extra waterproof layer that helps contain blowouts and protect clothing. Whether you’re using prefolds, flats, or fitted diapers, covers give you flexibility and peace of mind — especially during growth spurts or those unpredictable newborn poops.

Reusable Cloth Wipes: Gentle on baby, reusable, and easy!

Soft, reusable wipes are perfect for sensitive skin and tough messes. They’re more effective than disposables (especially for sticky situations), and you can toss them right into the wash with your diapers. Less waste, fewer supplies to restock, and a gentler clean for baby.

Waterproof Wet Bags: For soiled clothes, diapers, or post-blowout backups

Wet bags are an unsung hero of cloth diapering. Use them at home, in the diaper bag, or on the go to contain messes and odors until wash time. They’re waterproof, zip securely, and make it easy to separate clean from dirty — especially after a surprise blowout away from home.

Dual Sided Change Pads: Waterproof, foldable, and built for the mess

Poop does not wait for a “perfect” changing space. A waterproof changing pad gives you a clean, wipeable surface wherever you are — floor, couch, bed, or out and about. When accidents happen mid-change (because they will), cleanup is quick and stress-free.

Reusable Pail Liners: A must-have for containing the whole situation until wash day. Pail liners keep everything contained between washes — diapers, wipes, and all. They’re breathable yet durable, help manage odors, and make wash day easy: just lift the liner and toss it straight into the machine. One less step when you’re already dealing with enough.

Final Thoughts: Poop Happens — but you've got this!

Baby poop can be a rollercoaster of colors, consistencies, and curveballs. But with the right tools, a good wash routine, and a solid sense of humor, you’ll handle it like a pro.

Cloth diapering isn’t always clean — but it is manageable, sustainable, and when things get messy? Nora’s Nursery has your back(side).
