How Many Will You Need?

When determining how many cloth diapers you will need – regardless of style – there are a few factors that come into play. The first being your child’s age.  Newborns and baby's will need a larger stash of diapers, as they will soil their diaper more frequently. Whereas toddlers won’t need to be changed as frequently.

Another factor that will determine how many cloth diapers you need is how often you are planning to wash your cloth diapers. We understand that every family's circumstance is different, and some families may not have access to launder their cloth diapers as frequently as other families.

To avoid any bacteria build up that would cause harm to your cloth diapers, we recommend washing your used cloth diapers every 2 to 3 days at most. We always recommend spraying off or rinsing off any solids in your diapers prior to storing them in your diaper pail, wet bag, hamper etc. to help avoid any bacteria growth that can wear down your cloth diapers and cause diaper rashes and irritation to your baby.

So, how many cloth diapers to start? Let’s say you are washing your cloth diapers every two days, and your child needs to be changed every two hours.

Newborn: For newborns, we would recommend a stash of 24-36 cloth diapers, This could consist of:

Each diaper pack will come with inserts, however it is always good to have some extras on hand for the times you may need some extra absorbency – whether it be overnight or on a long car ride, etc.

Baby: For babies using Pocket Diapers, we would recommend a stash of 14–18 diapers.
This could consist of:

Each of pocket diaper, and pocket diaper pack will come with inserts, however it is always good to have some extras on hand for the times you may need some extra absorbency – whether it be overnight or on a long car ride, etc.

For babies using Diaper Covers, we recommend a stash of 14–18 covers to comfortably rotate through changes. Since our covers are sold separately from inserts, you'll want to pair them with absorbent layers like:

  • Bamboo inserts

  • Prefolds or flats

  • Natural fiber inserts (like hemp or cotton)

Depending on your baby's age and how often you do laundry, a good starting point is 2–3 absorbent inserts per cover. This gives you flexibility to reuse the cover between changes (as long as it’s not soiled), while simply swapping out the wet insert.

💡 Tip: Mix and match insert types to find what works best for your baby’s absorbency needs—especially for naps or overnight!

We offer a variety of other Inserts/prefolds that can be used in our pocket and cover diaper styles. See our insert/prefold collection here.

Toddler: For toddlers, we would recommend a stash of 14 to 24 cloth diapers. This could consist of:

Again with an extra 7 pack or two of bamboo inserts. Our Toddler Size Pocket Diaper Packs do not come with inserts. Shop our Large Bamboo Inserts Here. Want to purchase everything together? Shop our Toddler Diaper Bundles Here.

Between Sizes? 🧷 Here’s What We Recommend:
If your little one is  “between sizes” - Nearing the top end of our baby size or just starting to fit into toddler—we recommend grabbing one 7-pack in each size. This gives you the flexibility to test both fits and see what works best for your babe’s shape and absorbency needs. It also helps you build out your stash for the weeks ahead as they grow.

Upfront Costs

So how much would you be spending upfront?

For your newborn, because we recommend 24-36 diapers,  depending on the diaper packs you purchase, this could be approximately $300 -$450 USD upfront. This ensures you have enough for frequent changes and laundry rotation during those early days.

For your baby, because  because we recommend 14–18 diapers, depending on the diapers, and diaper packs you purchase this could be approximately $200–$300 USD upfront, depending on your final count and if you opt for extra inserts.

Inserts can be purchased after, at anytime, so it's okay to wait to see how many diapers and inserts you are going through a day first!

For your toddler, because we recommend 14-24  diapers, depending on the diapers, and diaper packs you purchase this could be approximately approximately $200-275  USD upfront, factoring in additional spending if you opt for extra inserts. Toddlers often go through fewer diapers per day, so a smaller stash may work just fine!

These estimations are based off of our current pricing for our cloth diaper packs (Newborn AIO, 7 Pack Pocket Diapers, 7 Pack Toddler Pocket Diapers). These estimations do not include tax, and/or shipping fees.)

Disposable diapers can cost families around $2,500 per child, while a full set of cloth diapers costs as little as $500 and can be reused for multiple children—offering huge savings. Unlike disposables, which contain chemicals, fragrances, and gels that can irritate sensitive skin, cloth diapers are made with soft, breathable materials like bamboo and microfiber, keeping your baby comfortable and dry. Plus, with adjustable sizing and long-lasting durability, cloth diapers provide a customizable fit that grows with your baby from infancy to potty training.

With proper care of our cloth diapers, they can last you from  newborn cloth diapers until your little one is potty trained, and can even be passed down to future kids. When you compare the impact on the environment of a handful of reusable cloth diapers to the staggering amount of materials involved in manufacturing 6000+ disposable diapers from birth to potty-training and the overwhelming amount of trash and plastic and other chemicals that will sit in the landfill for 500+ years, cloth diapers the clear winner of the sustainability contest.
